Library Service: #8 - Internet Searching and Research Instruction

Your story: Every time I deliver a lesson in Internet searching I see an improvement in student research results, and so do their teachers.  They waste less time and find better information.  I deliver a lesson in hoax and biased web sites as well.  Students must visit a site from a list that contains both good quality research sites and some hoax and misleading sites containing very biased information.  Then they complete a web site evaluation and have to decide what is a reliable site and what is not.  Some are obvious, but many are difficult to determine whether they are suitable for academic research or not; this lesson is always an eye-opener for students and their teachers.  I am still surprised how few of the teachers use web evaluation tools in their classrooms, no matter how much I push them!
